Centre Culturel Jean-Marie Tjibaou
January 7th and 12th, 2005
Jean-Marie Tjibaou was an important political figure in New Caledonia,
until he was assassinated. He is known for having led an independentist
movement, as well as for having helped promote the culture of the
Kanaks, the natives of this island. A museum on Kanak culture was opened
in 1998, and was named after his name.
All pictures are available either in tar
or zip formats. Also available is a tar
archive of the original pictures,
before being reworked (these are actually the same).
Note that the tarballs
contain all the pictures I took, not just the ones I present
on this page.
Unfortunately, our visit was cut short because of an error in our
guide. The museum closed earlier than the time printed in the guide,
so we couldn't stay very long during our first visit...

The museum also features a tropical garden, where several carvings like
this one are displayed.
